Penfolds Saint Henri Shiraz 2013
With a deep magenta, foreboding core, the bottle is instantly recognisable. First impression – Penfolds. Second – St Henri. Wafts ascend akin to roasted meats – seared crust of venison, game meats. Then a sprinkling of crushed kola nut, star anise, black liquorice, quince paste. A further swirl or two unleashes more familial St Henri markers of dark chocolate ganache and a biscotti nuttiness. Palate is complete with no gaps – spills across the palate avec a coating of fine (emery paper) polished tannins – inducing a ‘St Henri silkiness’. An assertive wedge of fruit – dark berried – boysenberry, loganberry, and blackberry – á la ‘Fruits of the Forest’. Yet, there’s much more – certainly not only appealing fruit, friendly tannins and balance. Add: luminosity, buoyancy, vibrancy, harmony … quite the package!
Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Richly colored in an inky purple hue, the wine offers aromas and flavors of dark fruits, featuring blackberry, currants, smoked meats and baking spices, with menthol and cedar. Cigar box notes accented by rich pipe tobacco. Trending toward full body with muscular tannins, the finish is long and lingering, with a dense texture that promises a long and rewarding life cycle. 90 points from cellar tracker
Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Red Blend 2013
The Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a generous core of brambly blackberry, cassis, and macerated blueberry, while the Merlot brings a vibrant, riper dark cherry fruit character. The Merlot also softens the tannins and adds plush rich texture on the mouth pleasing palate. Malbec contributed dark plum and briary blackberry notes, while the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot completed the blend with delicate floral nuances of violet and wild sage. Well integrated warm baking spice notes of cinnamon and clove also pique the senses incorporated from having been aged in new French oak barrels – which heighten the overall aromatic expression and linger on the finish. The tannins provide intensity, structure and depth, ensuring this vintage will outlast many others with significant age-worthiness. This is a wine that is the perfect bridge between old and new world – showing the restraint, elegance and sophistication of Napa Valley.
